As the Thanksgiving holiday and break winds down, the holidays begin to heat up. Before we move on, however, it’s important to take a look at this year’s Black Friday numbers.
Whether you opted for an online Black Friday or were one of the brave who decided to trek out into the night for the best deals, the numbers don’t lie: Black Friday 2019 sales were down six percent from last year. The most shocking piece of information is that this was the weakest turn out since 2014, according to www.cnbc.com. Coincidentally, Black Friday sales online skyrocketed 17 percent more than last year. There’s no doubt that this is in thanks to our world becoming more and more digital. With smartphones, smart televisions, and even smart watches literally at our fingertips, why would we ever want to brave the shopping storm?
The two stores who had the highest number of in-person sales were Target and Walmart. Of course, most shoppers purchased technology items, such as televisions, video game consoles, and other gadgets and gizmos. What more can you expect from a society practically run by the Internet and social media?
There were plenty of stores that didn’t do as well with the shopping extravaganza. Ulta, a cosmetics store, and Gap, a clothing store, both hosted less-than-impressive lines in their stores. Another surprising flop was Victoria’s Secret, a women’s clothing store. Typically, this is one of the few we can count on to outperform its competitors. For these stores in particular, their time isn’t over yet–the holidays are just around the corner, and it’s likely that they’ll see another increase in sales.
