If you enjoy the thrill and excitement of meeting someone new from an online dating service, get ready for the latest one: Facebook Dating.
What is it?
That’s right; Facebook now has a dating service. It launched in the United States yesterday, and if you’re 18 years of age or older, you can use it too. It’s got all the familiar features of other dating apps: a specialized profile, a matchmaking algorithm, and the hope of finding *the one.* The difference with Facebook’s model is that it already has so much of your information to work with from your profile. While some people may shutter at the thought of Facebook using your personal data, others might welcome it if it means finding true love.
The dating service is already located on the Facebook platform. You must create a separate profile to use it. To find matches, the service takes similar interests between you and another person and brings you together that way. It also gives you the chance to attend events that you both expressed interest in on Facebook.
Safety is the top priority
Safety is at the top of everyone’s list, and Facebook Dating is taking extra precaution to make that happen. Many people, namely women, tell friends and family about dates and where they will be held and at what time. Facebook Dating allows you to share your location with a friend using Apple’s popular app Find My Friends. However, the service only shows your location for up to an hour. Facebook is still playing with the time, for they don’t want to have people accidentally share their locations for too long.
Facebook Dating follows other dating services such as Hinge, where people write questions on the profiles for other people to answer. Whatever their answers are help them determine whether or not they would be a match. You can label yourself as “cis woman,” “cis man,” “trans woman,” “trans man,” or “non-binary person.” These answers won’t show up on potential matches’ profiles, another way of keeping your private information private.
Dating will boost use of Facebook
Even if this service doesn’t take off, people using it will boost Facebook’s core app. Young people often complain that Facebook is primarily used by their parents and their generation. Because of this, they have taken to Instagram and Twitter as their main social media app. If people use Facebook Dating, it will get people more active more often on the Facebook app. This helps the platform grow their number of users.
As expected, Dating will also appear on Instagram soon. Facebook owns Instagram, so the transition makes sense. There are no ads on Dating. This means that marketers and advertisers can’t use the service as a place to gain exposure.
Facebook Dating is available in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, Suriname, Thailand, Uruguay, and Vietnam. Europeans won’t have access to the service until 2020.
