For starters, a quick lesson on SEO and what it does: SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the process of increasing the quality and quantity of website traffic, increasing visibility of a website or a web page to users of a web search engine. This is all done through organic results, which is a more authentic way of bringing potential customers to your site. SEO gets your brand out there and seen by the millions of Internet viewers that come through every day, and the ultimate goal is to eventually get your website on the very front page of Google. 

Accurately write your page titles and meta descriptions.

When it comes to SEO mistakes to avoid, this is crucial to your success. Without the right information, how will potential customers ever locate your brand? Though there are programs that can fix this for you, it’s possible that they get overlooked because the small business owners are still working on their website and perfecting it. This means to avoid having the word “home” or some other generic word as your page title, because that means nothing to your brand. Instead, title it exactly as it’s supposed to be and use accurate descriptions to sell it.

Don’t forget to always place important text on your site and not in a picture.

This is an easy mistake, but it’s crucial to avoid it. If the text is on a picture, then those keywords won’t show up when someone runs a Google search for them since search algorithms look for actual text. Instead, they skip over your site even if it’s exactly what they would be looking for, and that’s one less customer you have. You can keep the nice-looking pictures but put the captions somewhere else. You’ll thank me later.

Never have boring or irrelevant content on your page.

This one should be obvious. People want up-to-date information so that they know you have exactly what they want. Replicating or reusing old content won’t bring in new customers, and it likely won’t even manage to show up anywhere near the first page of Google. An easy way to make this happen is to add a blog to your website and keep adding fresh information. By writing articles every other day, you increase the number of keywords used on your site and therefore increase traffic.

Keep up with SEO trends and don’t fall behind.

Let’s face it: SEO is here to stay whether you like it or not. You must be willing to constantly change and update your site to keep up with the times. For instance:

If you keep getting the same questions, there’s a good chance that the people who haven’t asked yet will at some point. Stay ahead of them. Have the FAQ page ready with the questions you know they’ll want answered and even some that don’t seem as obvious. As always, be responsive if they try to get in touch with you. Though SEO is a helpful tool to use when growing your business, the most important aspect of it is customer interaction and customer satisfaction. Keep those things in check and your recipe for success is complete.
