Instagram Now Requires Birthday for New Users

It’s no secret that the majority of Instagram users are between the ages of 18-24 and 25-34. While the age of 18 technically qualifies as an adult, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they have seen the world yet, or even know much about it. This is precisely why Instagram has now made it so that people just now signing up for Instagram must enter in their birthday in order to have access to an account due to age-sensitive information.

Must Be 13 or Older to Join

The minimum age to join Instagram has always been 13, but this is the first time the platform decided to regulate it. In an effort to keep things safer for users of all ages, Instagram implemented this new rule. Just because the platform requires a birthday doesn’t mean these ages will be displayed on their profiles, however. The same goes for those already using Instagram: if you already have an account, you won’t have to enter in your birthday, nor will your age be advertised on the network.

Privacy Problems

Facebook owns Instagram, and we all know that it experienced some serious privacy scandals this past year. While we cannot say for sure that this action spawned from those mistakes, it’s very likely that it did. The Internet is a big, scary place for those who don’t know much about it. Even celebrities worry about their children using it. LeBron James, NBA basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers, wouldn’t allow his son, LeBron James, Jr., or Bronny, to join the platform until he turned 15 years old. So if any parents out there ever doubt their choices, just remember that all parents feel the same way.

What Now?

Will this new addition of entering in birthday information make a difference? We can only hope and assume that it will, thus making the Internet a safer place for everyone in general.
