The future is now. Microsoft and OpenAI, an organization specializing in Artificial Intelligence technology, have joined forces to create safe, user-friendly AI and AGI machines. Microsoft invests $1 billion into OpenAI in hopes of learning and creating more AI and AGI.
The idea of Artificial Intelligence fascinates us. Even before we knew what to expect, robots and the future seemed like a lifetime away. Think again; the time is now. Though we are still in the learning process, the creation of AI for the public is eminent. Microsoft and OpenAI want to change our lives and the future.
Microsoft invested $1 billion into OpenAI, a San Francisco-based research lab founded by Silicon Valley celebrities, including Elon Musk and Sam Altman. They dedicate their time to the research and creation of artificial general intelligence. The companies plan to work together to create the latest in AI and AGI. Microsoft will be the company that’s in charge of cloud services to the newest AI creations, while OpenAI will likely license some of its technology to Microsoft, creating a symbiotic relationship between the two.
As per Microsoft:
“The companies will focus on building a computational platform in Azure of unprecedented scale, which will train and run increasingly advanced AI models, include hardware technologies that build on Microsoft’s supercomputing technology, and adhere to the two companies’ shared principles on ethics and trust. This will create the foundation for advancements in AI to be implemented in a safe, secure and trustworthy way and is a critical reason the companies chose to partner together.”
Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing service created by Microsoft. It builds, tests, deploys, and manages applications and services through Microsoft-managed data centers. With the two technological giants together, they plan to create something new and safe to use, AI might be available to the public sooner than we ever thought possible.
OpenAI began as a nonprofit lab in 2015, but realized that what they wanted to do required funds. Lots of funds. In order to get money from investors, they promised inventions and creations that they could produce if given the capital. The CEO of the company said that if the lab does manage to create artificial general intelligence, it could “maybe capture the light cone of all future value in the universe.”
To back that up, OpenAI has promised any investors that they will make back 100 times their investment. Microsoft, who invested $1 billion, should receive a pretty steep return barring any unforeseen issues.
Money aside, both companies have made it clear that safety is the number one goal. Without a safe product, it cannot be distributed; so before they worry about money, they plan to take care of what really matters first.
In the meantime, expect some big announcements from the collaboration of Microsoft and OpenAI. The future is sooner than you think.
