Let’s back it up for a second and review what a Fortune 500 company is, and why it’s important. The Fortune 500 is an annual list compiled and published by Fortune magazine that ranks 500 of the largest United States corporations by total revenues for their respective fiscal years. The list includes publicly held companies, along with privately held companies for which revenues are publicly available. The first Fortune magazine debuted in 1955 and still goes strong today. The original top ten Fortune 500 companies were General Motors, Jersey Standard, U.S. Steel, General Electric, Esmark, Chrysler, Armour, Gulf Oil, Mobil and DuPont.

These companies receive so much praise due to their success and the work ethic that goes into producing such necessary and useful products. In today’s world, part of their popularity is thanks to the use of social media. Without it, these companies wouldn’t be able to gain the exposure necessary in order to grow and adapt to changing times in the business world. Revenue is the income generated from normal business operations and includes discounts and deductions for returned merchandise. Without consumers to buy products, no revenue can be produced. That’s why social media matters so much.

The Rise of Social Media

Thanks to social media, the days of searching for potential customers are over. Now, people can post an advertisement for their business in the morning, and by the time evening comes, they can gain 20 or more new customers. Our world is completely digital, so it’s essential to follow suit and get the exposure where you can manage to find it.

To take an example from the previous list, let’s look at UPS. They have a Facebook account, a Twitter account, an Instagram account, a LinkedIn account, and even a YouTube channel. UPS is ranked number 42 on the Fortune 500 list, raking in around $58 billion in revenue every year. Everyone knows their slogan: “What can Brown do for you?” It’s one of the most well-known companies in the world, and partly thanks to their stellar social media presence, they can reach multiple audiences worldwide and grow even more with its help.

While we usually don’t think of Sandy Springs, Georgia as being one of the most famous cities in the world, it’s impressive that a company as big as UPS has its headquarters here. That means that it was able to reach every corner of the world despite its location, and that’s what really matters.

Find a Need and Fill It

On top of this fact, UPS provides a service that people desperately need. It’s a  multinational package delivery and supply chain management company. When people need to send this across the world in a short amount of time, they rely on UPS to help them do so. When running a business, make sure to offer a service or product that people can’t live without. It’s like the saying goes, “find a need and fill it.” People want to see innovation; this motivates them to want to use your company.

Your business might not grow to be the same size as UPS, but it could have a huge impact and reach a large audience if you make use of social media. It pays to make your presence known like that, and it could take you very far if you decide to make that a reality. 

Location Isn’t Everything

Anything is possible no matter the location of your business. UPS has its headquarters in little ol’ Sandy Springs, Georgia, and it continues to make the Fortune 500 list year after year. You don’t have to be in Hollywood to make a famous movie, but you do have to promote it quite a bit for it to gain any sort of exposure. Social media can help you do just that. When you use it the way it’s intended, it brings in all sorts of new customers and increases your revenue.
